Description

A delicious and hearty gourmet steak and cheese sandwich made with ribeye steak, caramelized onions, and provolone cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz ribeye steak, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 4 oz provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • In a pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally until they are caramelized (about 15-20 minutes).
    • Add balsamic vinegar and a pinch of salt, stir well, and set aside.
  2. Cook the Steak:
    • In the same pan, add the remaining olive oil.
    • Increase heat to medium-high and add the steak slices, seasoning with salt and pepper.
    • Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the steak is just cooked through.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich:
    • Butter one side of each bread slice.
    • Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, on a skillet over medium heat.
    • Layer with cheese, cooked steak, caramelized onions, and another layer of cheese.
    • Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
  4. Grill the Sandwich:
    • Grill the sandwich, pressing slightly, until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted (about 3-4 minutes per side).

Notes

  • For a more flavorful steak, marinate the slices in a bit of olive oil, garlic, and rosemary for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Use a panini press for easier grilling and even heat distribution.
  • Substitute provolone with other melting cheeses like mozzarella or American if desired.
  • Serve with a side of pickles or a fresh salad for added crunch and freshness.
