Description

A delicious and cheesy meatball sub loaf that’s perfect for sharing!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large Italian loaf
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Shape the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs.
  3. Cook the Meatballs: Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Prepare the Bread: Slice the top third off the Italian loaf and hollow out the inside, creating a long trench. Place the hollowed loaf on a baking sheet.
  5. Assemble the Sub Loaf: Spread a layer of marinara sauce in the hollowed loaf. Arrange the cooked meatballs on top of the sauce in a single line. Pour additional marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they’re well-coated. Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
  6. Bake the Sub Loaf: Place the assembled loaf in the preheated oven. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Cut into servings and enjoy!

Notes

  • Experiment with different types of cheese for more flavor.
  • Add some red pepper flakes to the marinara sauce for a spicy kick.
  • For a healthier option, consider using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Serve with a side salad or roasted veggies for a complete meal.
